Athletics Aligns With Our College Mission
Athletics aligns with the overall mission of San José City College for several reasons. Firstly, our goal is to offer the highest and most innovative level of coaching to our students. Given the diversity among the student body that typically attends community college and participates in athletics, the difference between success and not winning often depends on the quality of coaching and the coaches' ability to employ innovation in their teaching methods.
Secondly, the majority of our students aspire to transfer to and compete athletically at four-year institutions. Athletics provides an ideal pathway for student-athletes to garner interest and opportunities from these institutions that they might not otherwise receive.
Thirdly, athletics serves as an ideal platform for teaching students valuable life lessons. Through athletics, students learn about winning, losing, teamwork, and preparation. Athletics often offers athletes some of their most joyous moments as well as some of their most challenging ones, all of which can be stored away and used as lessons for future endeavors—a concept we refer to as 'Life-Long Learning.' It is through athletics that our staff and coaches are able to impart these crucial skills to our young people while simultaneously supporting the college's mission.
Athletics Contributes To Our College Vision
One of the unique aspects of working in athletics is the diverse range of personal growth areas that participation inherently fosters. We offer an unparalleled opportunity for growth, inquiry, and evidence. Few other fields provide such a platform for a group to unite under a common cause, fostering growth. Athletics also allows individuals to compete against other teams, providing a basis for inquiry as they gauge their efforts against those of their competitors. Moreover, athletics enables individuals to reassess and adjust their strategies based on outcomes, providing tangible evidence of progress.
The characteristics outlined in the SJCC vision statement encompass the life and soft skills that are acquired through athletic participation.
