Jags defeated after battling for ten innings against Seahawks
During this three-hour home conference game, there were multiple lead changes between the San Jose City Jags (10-11, 1-4 Coast) and the Cabrillo College Seahawks (9-11, 3-2) until the tenth inning when the Seahawks struck the final blow, and the Jags could not manufacture runs to win in a walk-off.
The game was tied 4-4 going into the 10th inning, and Alaina Valdez started with a strikeout on the first batter. The next batter lined the ball to left field, and the throw on the way to home was dropped as the runner on second scored easily, giving the Seahawks a 4-5 lead.
This was followed by a walk to load the bases. Then an RBI groundball to the centerfielder, Melissa Felix, who charged the ball and threw the runner out, sprinting from second to home by a mile at the plate for the third out. Before the third out, the runner on third scored, and the Seahawks increased their lead to 4-6. Then back-to-back hits put the Seahawks' runners in scoring position.
At least the Jags had one last chance to tie the game to keep it alive. With one out, Jade Henry smacked the ball over the left-center fence for a home run to give the Jags some hope. Sadly, the Seahawks retired the next two batters to close the game.
The Jags had to play without Coach Deborah Rooney because she was away with a one-game suspension for being thrown out against San Mateo Bulldogs for disagreeing with a call from the umpires.
Ironically, the Jags outhit the Seahawks 16 to 12, but the Seahawks took advantage of the Jags' errors that changed the momentum in their favor.
To start the game, the Seahawks threw the first punch after Karissa Smith's error on the leadoff batter, followed by an unearned RBI single to lead 1-0. The Jags tied it 1-1 in the second inning by Felix driving the ball up the middle to score Deja Jimenez, who led the inning with a bunt hit.
After the Seahawks answered back with another run in the fourth inning, the Jags were able to tie it again 2-2 after a two-out RBI line drive to center by Haley Castro, with Malia Venegas scoring from second base to home.
The Seahawks led again 2-3 in the fifth inning after a diving attempt by Jade Henry on a popped-up bunt who missed the ball by a centimeter, and the runner on third scored as the ball rolled to the backstop.
In the sixth inning, Karissa Smith crushed a high two-run double to give the Jags their first lead of 4-3. Unfortunately, another error by the Jags in the seventh inning allowed the first batter on base, which later led to her scoring from second on a ball up the middle to tie the game. The Jags could not execute runs.
