Jaguars chalk up another win on the road
The San José City College Jaguars increased their road game-winning streak to three, outlasting the Cabrillo College Seahawks in Aptos 32-24.
The scoring started early in the first quarter of the night game, with SJCC recording a team safety just one minute and ten seconds into the game. It gave the Jaguars an early 2-0 lead. SJCC continued their strong start with a 51-yard touchdown run by Mattias Carrillo, followed by a successful extra point by Roland Legaspi. The Jags extended their lead to 9-0 with just under seven minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Cabrillo responded with a 33-yard field goal by Juan Arroyo, narrowing the gap to 9-3 after a nine-play 48 yard drive. However, SJCC quickly answered back with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Trent Cousens to Anthony Jones, followed by a successful extra point by Matt Mirton. SJCC's led 16-3 with just 19 seconds left in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Cabrillo managed to find the end zone with a two-yard touchdown run by Peyton Hatten, with Juan Arroyo converting the extra point, bringing the score to 16-10 in favor of the Jaguars.
However, SJCC responded once again with a three-yard touchdown pass from Trent Cousens to Anthony Jones. Owen Lagos successfully converted the extra point, giving SJCC a 23-10 lead with one minute and 49 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
Cabrillo scored quickly before halftime, with Peyton Hatten running for a seven-yard touchdown. Juan Arroyo's extra point was good, making the score 23-17 SJCC leading.
The third quarter saw Cabrillo take the lead for the first time in the game. Aiden Rangel threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Issaiah Cruz, and Juan Arroyo's extra point was successful. Cabrillo seized a narrow 24-23 lead with seven minutes and 53 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
SJCC quickly responded with a 26-yard field goal by Matt Mirton, reclaiming the lead at 26-24 after an eight-play 60 yard-drive.
In the fourth quarter, the Jaguars extended their lead with a two-yard touchdown run by Jesse Lajes. Unfortunately, the extra-point attempt by Matt Mirton failed. The touchdown drive consisted of 12 plays and covered 55 yards burning six minutes off the clock and bringing the final score to 32-24 in favor of SJCC.
The win improved SJCC's record to 3-1, while Cabrillo's record dropped to 3-2. The road-tested Jaguars return home on Oct. 7 to take on Yuba College.
