Jaguars Hire Devin Aye
San Jose City College would like to welcome back one of our very own
San Jose would like to welcome back one of our very own, former San Jose City College Basketball team member Devin Aye (pronounced - Eye). Devin was hired recently to replace the legendary coach, Percy Carr, who stepped down after 45 years of walking the sidelines at San Jose City College.
Aye played for Coach Percy in 2003-04, a member of the team that finished 19-9, and were Coast Conference – South Champions. Aye transferred to play for his Father at Marshalltown Community College where he eventually beat the 3-time defending national champions (Southeastern CC) twice, Indian Hills and #1 ranked Moberly. MCC finished with a school record 25-9 record and an NJCAA Region XI Runner-Up finish. Aye concluded his career due to injury. Aye received an AA at Marshalltown CC (2005), BS in Kinesiology from CSU East Bay (2008), MS in Sport Management and in summer 2014 completed his second MS in Exercise Science from California University Pennsylvania. The 2018-19 basketball season will be his 15th year as men's collegiate coach at NCAA, NAIA and California Community College levels.
Aye's coaching experience includes assistant coaching roles at William Jessup University, CSU East Bay, and Chabot College; and head coaching stints at Cosumnes River College, Lassen College, and most recently Copper Mountain College where his 2017-18 squad finished with a 20-10 record, and a berth in the CCCAA Southern California playoff field.
While at Copper Mountain, Aye was given Athletics Director duties, and was charged with initiating the men's and women's basketball programs in their inaugural seasons from scratch.
Devin comes from a family of coaches, his father seeing success as a head coach at multiple colleges, the last being Chabot College for 12 seasons before ultimately retiring. Brother (Tyson) is the current head coach at Allen Hancock College.
Devin is excited about returning to the San Jose City College campus, and looks forward to acclimating himself into the department, in the classroom teaching, and directing young men on the court. Regarding his recent hire, Aye had this to say, "Dreams really do come true! I am extremely grateful to Dean Lamel Harris, President Roland Montemayor, the selection committee, and the rest of the administration here at SJCC for this opportunity. It feels great to be back in the purple and gold, where I have so many great memories as a former Jag student-athlete under legendary coach Percy Carr. My wife Liz, and daughter Maycie are also excited to be back in home and near family. This is a big-time athletic department that is well established though decades of Championships, and historic athletic accomplishments. I'm eager to build on the tradition Speed City in this incredible sparkling new Jaguar Sports Complex! It's a great time to be a Jag!"
"Devin beat out a healthy pool of very qualified applicants, with one of the major factors being his past experience as a former Jaguar. He knows the tradition because he experienced it first hand," said Dean Lamel Harris. Devin and I have discussed him not being concerned with the success Coach Percy had, finishing as the winningest African American coach in California Community College history; in the top-5 of winningest college coaches ever, but rather focus on building his own tradition of excellence."
Aye's wife and daughter will be relocating from Southern California in the near future to make the transition complete. Aye spends the majority of his time now recruiting, teaching the summer team class, and planning for what he hopes is a successful 19-20 campaign.
